Saint Patrick's Day Irish Whiskey Cake with Whiskey Glaze & Buttercream Filling

Saint Patrick's Day is a holiday celebrated around the world, but it is particularly significant in Ireland, where it originated. One way to celebrate this holiday is by enjoying traditional Irish foods and drinks, and what better way to do that than with a delicious Irish Whiskey Cake? This dessert is perfect for any St. Patrick's Day celebration and will be sure to impress your guests. Here's everything you need to know to make this scrumptious cake.

Ingredients:

For the cake:

1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
4 eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup Irish whiskey
1/2 cup whole milk
For the whiskey glaze:

1/4 cup unsalted butter
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup Irish whiskey
For the buttercream filling:

1 cup unsalted butter, softened
4 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup Irish whiskey

Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the whiskey and milk, and mix until well combined.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

While the cake is baking, prepare the whiskey glaze by combining the butter, sugar, and whiskey in a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar is dissolved.

Once the cake is done baking, remove it from the oven and poke holes all over the top with a toothpick. Pour the whiskey glaze over the top of the cake, spreading it evenly with a pastry brush.

Let the cake cool completely in the pan.

While the cake is cooling, prepare the buttercream filling by creaming the butter in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating well after each addition. Add the Irish whiskey and mix until well combined.

Once the cake has cooled completely, remove it from the pan and slice it in half horizontally.

Spread a generous layer of the buttercream filling on the bottom half of the cake, then place the top half back on.

Serve and enjoy!

Variations:

There are many variations you can make to this recipe to suit your taste preferences. Here are a few ideas:

Add a teaspoon of cinnamon or nutmeg to the cake batter for extra flavor.
Instead of using buttercream filling, use whipped cream or cream cheese frosting.
Add chopped nuts, such as pecans or walnuts, to the cake batter or sprinkle them on top of the cake for added texture.
Use a different type of whiskey, such as bourbon or rye, for a different flavor profile.
